Where It Grows Best

This mix thrives across the United States, performing in a wide range of climates:

  • Sun & Partial Shade: Adapts well from full sun to shaded areas
  • Soils: Tolerant of a variety of soil types, including poor soils
  • Maintenance: Minimal mowing and irrigation required
  • Works well for residential lawns, commercial properties, and meadow-like landscaping

Planting Overview

  • New Lawns (Bare Soil): Remove existing vegetation and loosen top 1–2 inches of soil. Broadcast seed evenly and press into soil surface.
  • Overseeding Existing Lawns: Mow current lawn to 1–2 inches, then spread seed directly over lawn. Light watering encourages germination.
  • Germination: Typically 2–5 weeks, depending on soil and temperature
  • Flowering & Coverage: Clover blooms attract pollinators; grasses provide low, dense coverage
  • Optional Mowing: Can mow to prevent flowering and bee activity

Tip: Full coverage usually develops after 1–2 seasons.

Note: This alternative lawn behaves differently than traditional grass. Expect slower initial coverage and some seasonal variation in bloom. It may take 1–2 seasons to fully establish, and some mowing or acclimation is helpful to guide growth and maintain a neat appearance.

Growing Zone

True Low Grow Alternative Lawn Mix is widely adaptable and grows successfully across most U.S. regions.

  • Ideal Regions (See Map): 1,2,3,4,7 (zones 5–6 perform best with part shade and irrigation during driest months)
  • U.S. Regions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Pacific Northwest
  • Notes: The mix is hardy even to Zone 3 and tolerant of diverse soils and light conditions

Composition

EcoSeed Fine Fescues:

  • Creeping Red Fescue – forms a dense, low-growing carpet, perfect for a soft, natural lawn
  • Chewings Fescue – shade-tolerant and soft underfoot, adds texture and resilience
  • Sheep Fescue – drought-resistant with a deep green color for year-round appeal

Clovers:

  • White Dutch Clover – stays low, adds nitrogen to soil, and attracts pollinators
  • Crimson Clover – bright seasonal blooms that support bees and butterflies
  • Red Carpet Clover – dense groundcover with extended flowering and pollinator value
